Abandonia (2003)
website redesign and maintaining community
Abandonware
Abandonia is an online platform, founded by Kosta Krauth, where people can find and (if possible) download their favourite old DOS computer games. Games come with an extensive user review and score, supplemented by average scores given by the Abandonia community. Aside from the games itself, Abandonia also offers services like boot-disks, 3th party software to get the games up and running, and a very active and lively community.Community driven
Abandonia couldn't have grown into the size it has grown during the years without the community behind it. The community actively participates in writing reviews, capturing screenshots, searching for available games and all other sorts of activities to help out the site. The most valuable and active members are promoted to 'V.I.P.'s' and get access to the games which are to big in filesize to add to the public downloads.Community driven
during the time I actively participated as the visual designer we have created a website which had a blend of good interaction, informal tone-of-voice and a visual style which I call ''for some reason it works''. The design was made in a period I just started as a student and I didn't really had a clue. But fore some reason it worked and became quite iconic.Over the years we continued to add services and features to increase the usability. The amount of pageviews grew tenfold in a couple of months from 10.000 to around 100.000 a day and we had to switch servers a couple of times before we managed to handle the amount of traffic in a proper way.
Abandonia Reloaded
After a while we felt the need to seperate the abandonware (games without technical support and therefore abandoned) from the freeware (officially free) games. For that purpose we created Abandonia Reloaded.Visit the current site
